tess & dr. v. – tess, the therapy dog in training. skip to content tess & dr. v. tess, the therapy dog in training. menu and widgets home about me contact me intro to animal- assisted therapy a new beginning first steps with tess share buttons facebook twitter linkedin signup for new post notification name email * contact me [email protected] west palm beach, florida recent comments tessanddrv on first steps with tess intro to animal- assisted therapy i would like to begin with a thank you and shout out to dr. cynthia chandler, author of animal assisted therapy in counseling (2017). she has conducted and published research in this field and has proposed a theoretical approach, human-animal relational theory (hart), which in the academic field, is kind of a big deal. i look forward to eventually reviewing and reporting on hart. tess all cover girly i contacted cynthia to let her know how helpful her book has been and tell her about the blog. her response was both gracious and encouraging and was she was happy to give me her blessing on referencing her book which serves as my number one resource. today i will be posting about the differences between service dogs, therapy dogs, and emotional support (comfort) animals. we will look at what certifications and training are available for the different types of animals and the ethics involved in certifying your dog or pet. i’ll begin with a description of animal-assisted therapy (aat). what is animal-assisted therapy? animal-assisted therapy uses positive human-animal interactions to increase well-being and promote recovery in clients seeking physical or mental health services. it utilizes the natural need humans have to attach to others and share our space with other life forms. aat is the new kid on the block in terms of its use in the promotion of client welfare, growth, and development in mental health settings. because it is a relatively new field most practitioners are unfamiliar with the research and clinical applications. a major goal of this blog is to disseminate what i discover in the use of a therapy dog in practice. what is a therapy dog? the american kennel club defines therapy dogs as dogs who go with their owners to volunteer in settings such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. however, i am interested in the use of tess as a therapeutic agent in a professional counseling session. for instance, ethical clinical practice emphasizes boundaries, especially in regards to touching clients. i believe that the use of a therapy dog as a surrogate for therapeutic touch could be meaningful and deeply therapeutic as a specific intervention. chandler (2017) suggests that incorporating the talents and traits of a therapy dog in therapy can be helpful in many ways. it can increase client motivation to attend session; clients may receive nurture and physical affection during session; clients may be soothed and comforted; and, the therapeutic relationship may be strengthened through the genuine acceptance and entertaining interactions with the animal, to name a few. chandler states “two of the greatest assets a therapy animal brings to a counseling session are: (1) the animal’s capacity and desire to nurture people and, (2) the animal’s ability to detect and signal emotional distress it perceives occurring in a person.” (chandler, 2017, p. 3). there can also be dramatic effects when working with resistant or dysfunctional clients compared with the same work without a therapy animal. as we get deeper into the field of aat i will provide greater detail about the benefits and clinical applications. service dogs service dogs are highly trained and are considered working dogs rather than pets. service animals are defined by the americans with disabilities act (ada), are only dogs, and are trained to perform specific tasks related to helping individuals with documented disabilities. the ada requires that any place open to the public give access to service dogs and their owners. only two questions may be asked of someone with a service dog: is the dog required because of a disability and what task is the dog trained to perform? it is illegal to request documentation for the dog or to ask the nature of the owner’s disability. these protections for the disabled have made it easy for others to abuse the system. surprisingly, there is no official certification for a genuine service dog. as a result, fraudulent “certifications” that look quite official are cheaply available for people to cheat the ada provisions so they can bring their pet where they are this is a a fraudulent credential otherwise not allowed. because of the number of dishonest individuals claiming to have a disability and demanding accommodations for their “certified service animal” many states have passed additional laws and penalties to curb service dog fraud. people are catching on i’ve posted a link to the ada national network that provides an excellent overview of why service animals are so important. emotional support animals emotional support animals (sometimes referred to as comfort animals) are a general designation given to pets of various species who offer some fashion of support and comfort to their owners who suffer from mental health disorders or emotional issues but are not disabled. they are not recognized under the ada provisions and there is no standard or requirement for training or certification. however, there are a few legal protections offered to people in need to a support animal. with a letter from a physician, or in some cases a licensed mental health practitioner, emotional support animals may fly with their humans and they may qualify for non-pet housing. training & credentialing. there are several legitimate organizations that provide certifications for therapy dogs and emotional support animals based on rigorous evaluations of both the animal and the handler. a good starting point for training is with the american kennel club. the akc canine good citizen testevaluation emphasizes good behavior and temperament. this is very suitable for pets and emotional support animals and represents a beginning point for the more rigorous aat certifications. i believe all pet and support dogs should be trained at this minimal level. the process of becoming a certified therapy team with your pet is an important level of credentialing that identifies the handler as being prepared and at least minimally competent for therapy work with their pet. i am considering certification through either therapy dogs international (tdi) or pet partners as they have large memberships and have rigorous training requirements. therapy dogs international (tdi) is the oldest therapy dog organization in the us and has over 20,000 dog/handler registered teams. therapy dogs international tdi provides a certification based on a rigorous 13 element test that simulate activities and dynamics that occur in therapy settings such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, etc. the tdi evaluations are performed by tdi-certified examiners. i will provide a link to tdi at the end of the blog. pet partners is another large certifying organization for therapy dogs and other animals. they are more rigorous than tdi and have a two part skills and aptitude test with four different ratings: not suitable for therapy, not suitable for therapy, not ready, predictable, and complex. pet partners has extensive online/webinar training and requires a pet partners’ handler training. certification and membership include liability insurance for volunteers and a periodical. revaluations are required every two years and a thorough health screening by the pet’s veterinarian using pet partners guidelines. dr. chandler promotes pet partners for those who want to utilize aat in their practice. i will post a link to their website. okay, that’s a lot of words so i’ll stop here. next post i’ll update you on tess and talk about our training. thanks for reading and please share th
